Allison Williams on Her Eczema Turning Point and the Art of Doing Nothing

The ‘Girls’ star on years of tolerating flares, finally changing course—and why this revival will be different.

If you spent the 2010s debating Hannah versus Marnie, Allison Williams needs no introduction. Since Girls, she’s gone on to Get Out and M3GAN, and her polished, put-together look has made her a quiet beauty reference for a generation of fans.

What fans may not know, however, is that she spent decades managing eczema, including a flare she was dealing with while accepting a Golden Globe for Girls. In a recent interview , she explained how she went from assuming the condition would never change to finding a treatment that works for her. Ahead: the moment she decided enough was enough, why she now talks about it openly—and what’s different heading into the Girls revival.

What made her finally address her eczema?

For years, she just lived with it. Prescription creams hadn’t been working, but when the eczema spread to her scalp, something shifted. “Okay, I have to deal with this now,” she remembers thinking. She went back to her dermatologist, who recommended Dupixent (dupilumab), a prescription biologic, since topicals hadn’t helped.

Worth knowing: Eczema that keeps returning, spreads or doesn’t respond to over-the-counter care is worth a dermatologist visit. Prescription treatments are a decision only you and your doctor can make.

Why does she talk about it so openly now?

She’s such a fan of the treatment that she partnered with its makers, Sanofi and Regeneron, to share her experience. When she talks about it, friends often realize they’ve had eczema themselves and have simply been putting up with it.

What’s different about the ‘Girls’ revival?

Much of the original cast is returning for a five-episode limited run filming this summer. This time, she told NewBeauty, she’s relieved her eczema won’t be joining her on set.
